Best film magazine in the UK?
I used to buy Empire, then found it just seemed to become a PR vehicle for major studio releases, it lost the edge it used to have. I then bought Neon, which folded after about 10 issues. Then Hot Dog, but that seemed to run out of steam. What UK film mags do you buy and why?
I used to buy Empire too, it was a really good magazine, back in the early 90’s. Then, like you said, it just got really commercial. Plus, it’s gotten really vulgar too, it’s a real lad’s mag now. I think they must be trying to compete with FHM and the like.
Empire has a real old boy’s club feel too, it thinks of itself as far too much of an insider, and is consequently very smug.
There really aren’t that many great film magazines left. I might pick up the occassional Total fim or the like, but now I’m much more likely to buy a Vanity Fair or something when they have a good film story. The quality of writing just seems so much better.
I suppose if you’re really into films, there’s always Sight and Sound, but that’s a real industry magazine – not popularist enough for me…
